May Races – Stage 5

May Race Format

Last month we wished our self a rain race and we got it. And it was raining cats and dogs. And it was messy and slippery and really fun! For once we saw the star drivers with slow lap-times and other side less skilled ones leading the races.

The winners were those who actually get through the rounds rather than sitting in the grass somewhere watching the others go past because they have spun in one corner. Need to say that we do not have rain tires, so it was really a challenge to maneuver the karts through the rain.

Many thanks to TOTAL KENYA who supported us with the overalls, in this race we really needed them.

The race format was the same as in January, with first a team wise qualifying of four laps to determinate the start grid, then followed by 3 semi final and last the two final races. In total about 17km for each driver – a distance to wrench off the flesh by the next morning.

Guest Race

The guest drivers were scared of the rain and did not show up or refused to drive. The only two who were eager to race, Beat Bachmann and Hans Bolli,
were included in the Main Races.

The Race

For the Championship drivers there was no excuse. We completed the full program regardless the track conditions.

In the qualifying our fast lady Beth Rune showed the best-lap time. She was over half a second faster than Ashlin who still holds the track record. (But under dry conditions). All lap times were about 3 seconds slower than usual.

But times of 36 and later in the races even 35 are really fast on a track with standing water.

The first Pre-final Heat started Mark Jennings in the pole position, followed by Adnan Din and Aniz Popat. Ali Mirza, our youngest driver of only 10 years, spun at the first corner and blocked Adnan who lost so his good position. Winner after 15 laps was Mark Jennings, second was Gary Sampson.

The second Heat was with Walter Brun at the top. Paolo Rocca started before the green flag was falling and caused a restart. In this case the offender has to line up at the end of the grid for the restart, anyway that was already his position. The race then was one of the best. Walter in front and Torben Rune only a few centimeters behind over many laps. A risky fight on the in the meantime completely wet track. Easily both can end up somewhere in the bushes along the track and watch the others passing. Finally Torben overtook Walter and crossed the finishing line as first.

Then again two duel in the third Heat. Beth started in pole and Steven Webb very close behind her, trying here and there to overtake. Finally Beth, who seems to be a really good rain driver won more and more distance and we saw a fight for rank two between Ashlin Bending and Steven. Ashlin made it and ended as second behind Beth. Our two guest drivers competed in the same race and managed to finish the race in the same lap as our champions.

Finals:

In the Semi-Final Heat Adnan Din was first on the grid and Beat Bachmann, one of the guest drivers, second. Alnoor Dhanjee and Anita Irwin who both started at the rear of the field overtook one by one until Alnoor was the winner, Adnan second and Anita third.

The Final was a race with nine karts. All fast drivers, so the field was very close together over many laps. As usual when Ashlin and Gary drive together we saw once more a rough duel between them. Ashlin kicked Gary once in the rail tires but he recognized his mistake and let Gary then pass. Winner of the final race was Mark Jennings who started in pole and was leading all over the race.

On the podium at the prize giving:
Mark Jennings (Mambo Bado) as winner, Steven Webb (KUKU) as second and Torben Rune as third.

After five races the leading team is again ”KENYALASTMINUTE.COM”.

Championship Points:

Out of the five races up to now the two with the lowest number of points do not count. This allows the drivers to miss up to two championship days without loosing points.

With the now corrected points list we find Torben Rune leading with 57 points

Followed very close by Adnan Din and Steven Webb with both 56 points.

Next Championship race Saturday on August 27th.
