March Races – Stage 3

March Race Format

The Mombasa Go-Kart Championship 2005 is a series of 8 race days, one per month. After two “normal” races we had this time a very special race format, so called Knitting Race where the drivers follow different ways during the race. At the end of the race they all made the same distance. During a normal race, especially with drivers of same performance, there are only very few changes in positions. In a Knitting Race the positions are changing after every lap and change back the next lap, this brings more overtaking and makes the race more fun.

Guest Race

In the Guest Race and in the order they started:

Sanjay Pandya, Linda Brun, Nikhil Pandya, Hans Bolli and Horand Knaup.

The Race was a normal race over 15 laps. Sanjay, with a best lap time in the 33’s, was the favorite, but he spun twice in the hairpin bend. We had a lot of overtaking and Horand managed to cross the finishing line as second after starting as last on the grid. Winner was Linda Brun, second Horand Knaup and third Sanjay Pandya.

The Race

The Qualifying was this time on the short track which was a new experience for all of the drivers. Best times in the Qualifying for the brothers Adnan and Nadeem Din (24.75 and 25.07).

Beside the knitting mode, the race format was the same as in the past with 3 pre-final and 3 final heats. In the pre-final heats the drivers award team-points and qualify for one of the final races and in the final races they get driver points. The start grid is according the times in the Qualifying.

In the first race, Adnan started in pole followed by Adam Bundle. After a few laps, while each was going his own way, Adam had a good lap and could manage to reach the meeting point before Adam. So Adam was the winner and collected 5 points or his team, followed by Adnan and Paolo.

In the second race Steven Webb was from the start all over the race far ahead from the rest of the field. We saw a thrilling fight for rank two and three between Anita Irwin and Walter Brun. Anita was in front and Walter close behind. Bad luck for Walter that both drive in the same group and so always followed the same way. But after 10 laps he could overtake her and Walter went as second over the finishing line. Winner was Steven and third Anita.

Muzahir Khan made the best lap time in this race (24.70) but after an incident he finished as last.

In the last pre-final race Nadeem started in pole. All crossed the finishing line in the same way they started.

Finals:

The quarterfinal was with only 3 drivers. Ruhi Mirza and Aniz Popat had a collision in the fountain bend so it was an easy win for Mazahir Khan.

In the semifinal Adam Bundle started in pole in front of Mark Jennings and Paolo Rocca. The only 10 years old Ali Mirza started as last and went as second over the finishing line. Winner was Mark and third Adam.

With drivers like Adnan, Nadeem, Steven, Walter, Alnoor in the final, everything was open and the spectators got a thrilling race. The Din brothers started in front but lost soon their positions to Steven Webb who really had a good day.

Alnoor and Adnan were fighting for rank 2. They were not in the same group what means that every second lap they separated and went different ways. Then at the meeting point they found again together and changed their positions several times. Nadeem, who had also a good chance for a place on the podium, took twice the wrong way at the junction and had to turn and finally even got a penalty for touching the tires at the meeting point, but he still crossed the finishing line as fourth.

On the podium at the prize giving:
Steven Webb (KUKU) as winner, Alnoor Dhanji as second and Adnan Din (ADDY) as third.

After three races the leading team is ”KENOZ”.

Conclusion:

This race, Torben, Gary and Ashlin were absent. So we have a lot of changes in the overall points list. We got this time also some unexpected winners. Maybe because of the knitting race which makes it easier to overtake.

After both missing one race, Torben and Adnan are at the moment the favorites for the champion’s cup. But there are still 5 races up to October.

I hope too see all driver on next race on April 30th. It will be a complete different race format. We will race always in a group of 3 drivers with a parallel start. The last one will be kicked out while the two winners continue in the next races. After about twenty races we remain with the best 3 drivers and finally with a winner. A live band and a show will accompany the races.
