February Races – Second Race Day

February Race Format

For the second race this season we run the track in opposite direction. Although our karts are not designed to go around counter clockwise most drivers like this way more. There is one section where it goes a bit downhill and this helps the heavier drivers to compensate their handicap. On the long straight along the parking the karts reach their maximum speed and with almost 70km/h you drive towards the wall at the pit hall. Then only 5 meters in front the wall you have to turn at full speed to the left. Most drivers need a while until they are courageous enough to do so, but good fun!

Otherwise the race format was same as in January, with a qualifying first and then 3 pre-final and 3 final heats.

Unfortunately all the Pekee were absent at a family commitment. But on the other hand it was also a good chance for some drivers to make points.

Guest Race

As guests started eleven senior drivers at 5pm. The oldest drivers were Martin Mullhaupt (74) and Freddy Schumacher (70). The track was quiet full with eleven drivers. Our flagmen had to be everywhere at the same time. The race was won by Enea Biagini, second was Hans Blazer and third Rob Veldkamp.

The Race

Best times in the Qualifying for Torben Rune and Alnoor Dhanji and they secured their pole position for the following races.

In the first race Paolo Rocca and Beth Rune started in front but lost soon their positions and Steven Webb won the race.

In the second race Torben started in pole and Ashlin as second. In the only 30meters up to the first bend Ashlin overtook the pole and managed to be already two kart length in front. At the start the big weight difference matters most. During the rest of the race there were no more changes in positions. Walter Brun was third during the whole race and always very close behind Torben as second. At the end they crossed the finishing line side by side with Torben only half a kart length in front.

In the third race we had only 4 drivers. Alnoor started as first and was all the race miles ahead of the others. Only 200meters before the finishing line, while the crowd was already applauding for his victory, suddenly his driving belt broke and he lost his fist place to Gary Sampson. That’s racing! Bad luck for Alnoor.

Finals:

The semi-final was won by Beth Rune. In the final we had again Torben and Ashlin in front, followed by Paolo und Walter. This time Torben had a better start and went as first in the 180degree bend. Always the field was very close together and with 9 karts there was a lot of contact.  Ashlin pushed several times another kart and the race-director ordered a penalty of 5seconds. That is how he lost his third place to Walter and went as last over the finishing line.

On the podium at the prize giving:
Torben Rune as Winner, Paolo Rocca as second and Walter Brun as third.
Many thanks to the Sponsor Hans Blazer from KEDEV Car Hire and Safaris who sponsored and handed over the prizes.

After two races the leading team is ”KENYALASTMINUTE.COM”.

Conclusion:

We were all missing Addy, Nadeem and the Mirza family. They loose their good ranks in the overall points list now to other drivers. But out of the 8 races only 6 award points. That means also the drivers who don’t miss any race have to cancel two races.

All welcomed the changed rules. We had no more jumping starts because the offenders risk to be put at the end of the field and no more complaints about the kart allocation. Next race is on 19th march.
